RPThe town was named Arp after William Arp, a popular newspaper editor. Before it was called Arp it had many names, such as Strawberry, Strawberry Junction, Jarvis Switch, and Strawberry Switch. The town grew and in 1911 Arp Guaranty State Bank opened. The population in 1914 was 400. In 1931 Guy V. Lewis drilled the first successful oil well in the county near Arp. This helped Arp to boom and cause it to not be greatly affected by the Great Depression. The population in 1936 was at its peak with 2,500.
