Reading List for AP English IV

The following texts will be covered during the 2004-2005 school year.  These texts will be read on your own time, so I recommend you get a head start on your reading right away.  When school gets busy, you’ll be glad you did!  You will be given very little class time to read your novels.

It is your responsibility to obtain copies of the books and be prepared for book checks on the first day of each six weeks.

You may purchase your books at bookstores such as Barnes and Noble; at half-price bookstores such as the Pea Picker; or you may check them out of the school or local public library.

One more thing… I recommend you take good notes as you read and analyze these novels.  Remember to annotate and/or keep up your dialectical journals.  Happy reading!

ü     Required: 3-Ring Binder ~ Portfolio for writing samples, tests, exercises, dialectical journaling, note-taking and handouts.  This syllabus should be the first item in your binder.  Many SCANS grades will come from your portfolio efforts.

ü     Required: ARCO Master the AP English Literature & Composition Test (Study Guide)

ü     Required: The Fountainhead by Ayn Rand {This novel must be completed by the first day of school.  Yes, there will be a quiz!  Failure to read this novel may result in your placement in a regular English class.  I will include a study guide on Class Server for you to check out this summer.}

ü     Required: Bulfinch’s Mythology by Thomas Bulfinch

ü     Required: Sophie’s World by Jostein Gaarder

ü     Required: Frankenstein by Mary Shelley
