SCHOLARSHIPS

ACCESS (Academy for Collegiate Excellence and Student Success)

Prairie View A & M University

Prairie View, Texas

Purpose:  to provide a comprehensive living and learning experience for Prairie View freshman during the

                  summer prior to fall classes.

Eligibility:

1.        high school senior;

2.        completed ACCESS application;

3.        three (3) sealed recommendation forms; and

4.        current transcript.

Deadline:  December 6

Amount:  summer school tuition

 

The Barbara Jordan Historical Essay Competition

Sponsored by The University of Texas at Austin

Eligibility:  open to any Texas high school student

Amount:  $2,500 (1st prize); $1,500 (2nd price); $1,000 (3rd prize)

Deadline:  March 7

 

Carr Academic Scholarships

Angelo State University

San Angelo, TX

Eligibility:

1.        rank in top 15% of graduating class;

2.        score a minimum 1140 SAT 1 (combined math and verbal) or a minimum composite ACT; and

3.        financial need.

Amount:  $1,500 to $6,000

Deadline:  February 1

 

National High School Oratorical Contest

The American Legion

Eligibility:

1.        high school student under 20 years of age;

2.        U.S. student or lawful resident;

3.        prepared 8 – 10 minute original oration on some phase of the Constitution of the United States;

4.        3 – 5 minute oration on an assigned topic (related to the basic principles

Amount:  $18,000 (1st place); $16,000 (2nd place); $14,000 (3rd place)

Deadline: January 1

 

DeVry Scholarships

DeVry University

Eligibility:

                1.    high school senior;

                2.    application to any DeVry University; and

                3.    ACT composite of 24+ or SAT combined of 1100+;

Amount:  $40,000 Presidential (2); $1,500 (Dean’s)

Merit Scholarship
Rice University

Houston, TX

Eligibility:

1.            African-American or Hispanic-American;

2.            high school senior who plans to apply for fall admission to Rice.

Amount:  $10,000

Deadline:  February 1

 

Texas Student Housing Authority

Town of Westlake

Eligibility:

1.            High school graduating senior

2.            SAT or ACT score (highest single test-day score)

3.            students accepted to or attending college in Austin, College Station, Denton or San Marcos, TX

4.            first year students whose college campus permits them to live off campus

          completed application

Amount:  $2,500 annually

Deadline: February 28

 

Texas Society of Professional Engineers (TSPE)

Eligibility:

                1.    high school senior planning a career in engineering;   

2.        must enroll full-time in an accredited engineering program at a Texas university; and

3.        completed application (on website @ www.tspe.org.

Amount:  $500 (5 Texas awards)

Deadline:  January 15

 

Southwestern Adventist University

Keene, TX

Eligibility:

1.        high school senior

2.        competitive ACT or SAT score

Amount:  $500 - $4,000 (based on formula)

Texas Elks State Association (TESA) Scholarship

Texas Elks

Eligibility:

1.        high school senior;

2.        not in top 5% of graduating class;

3.        enroll in an accredited junior college, four-year college or university in Texas;

4.        exemplary character, leadership, extra curricular activities; and

5.        financial need.

Amount:  $1,000 per year for 4 years (3 male; 3 female)

Eligibility:

1.        cumulative GAP of 2.5+

2.        works 15 hours per week, 40 weeks per year

3.        demonstrates participation in community service and/or co-curricular activities

4.        can obtain written recommendations and signatures form school official and employer

5.        Plan to enroll in accredited two-year or four-year college, university, vocational-technical school no later than Fall 2005

Amount:  $1,000 (16)

Deadline:  December 15

 

National Commission for Cooperative Education

2.        complete on-line application including typed one-page essay describing why pursuing college cooperative education program
