Enter--Using Real World Math

1999-2000

Arp ISD Mathematics Department

Objective: To promote interest in Arp ISD.

To expose students to the relevance in learning mathematics.

To encourage students to be successful in mathematics.

To develop a working relationship with Arp ISD &

the business world. (local, as well as, global)

Program: This program is designed to promote a greater interest in mathematics at Arp ISD. Many students find it very difficult to appreciate any need to develop their mathematics skills. By making contact with businesses in related fields, we are hopeful that our students will come to appreciate the importance, as well as the necessity, of math in their lives. We are welcoming and encouraging businesses to take an interest in our students by sending us their real world problems that develop in their everyday businesses (via e-mail if possible). The students will then attempt to solve the problem as best they can. If some further learning is necessary, the teacher (and/or the business contact) will assist in discovering the possible solutions. The students will then e-mail the contact business back with their solutions and steps taken to solve the problem. The contact business will then reply with praise or possible suggestions. We will encourage our contact businesses to try to communicate with our students at least once a month. We will be acknowledging these businesses by notifying various media formats of our program and the businesses involved in our endeavor. We realize this is a major commitment on the part of the contact business and hope the reward will come in knowing the lives of our future work force have been enriched as well as changed. We also hope our contact businesses will plan to visit our school sometime throughout the school year to meet and visit with our students and let them meet their mentors that have given so much of themselves.
