What Employers Want

[The American Society for Training and Development (ASTD), with the assistance of the U.S. Department of Labor, surveyed Fortune 500 firms to determine what skills employers want.  Below, in no particular order, are listed 10 skills that employers consider to be "workplace basics".  You task is to rank them in order of importance from highest to lowest.  Place by the number 1 the most important, by the number 2 the next most important, and so forth. ]

3. PROBLEM-SOLVING  (TAKS & SCANS SKILL) Can think outside the box.  Can use system-thinking to view total picture, use technologies to solve problems

5. LISTENING (SCANS SKILL) Takes time to listen, reflect, understand, and analyze before communicating.

8. WRITING  (TAKS SKILL) Can communicate through written word effectively, efficiently, and professionally.
9. COMPUTATION (TAKS SKILL) Understands how to apply formulas to real-world settings.
10. READING  (TAKS SKILL) Can glean information, has appropriate research skills, and can find answers in text.
