FREQUENTLY MISSED CONCEPTS:

WHAT is WRONG with this Search String?

(~strategies}+(methods)+(approach*)+(tech*)+(read*)+(lang)+(liter*)+(learn*disab*)+(dyslex*)+(child*)+(youth)+(instruct*)+(train*)+(teach*)+(educat*)

( ) are used to GROUP keywords and an operator ...like

(~strategies +reading)  Do not use them around a single word.

Do I need methods, approach or techniques in the search string if I use

~strategies?   No, because ~strategies is like using all the synonyms already.

Do I need parentheses around single words?  No because parentheses are used to GROUP keywords with an operator (+ or -).

What else is NOT necessary in the above search string?  If I use ~child*, do I need youth? No.

If I use ~instruct*, do I need train, teach, educate? No.

What Should that Search String Look Like?  Maybe something like.....

(~strateg* +read*) +literacy +"learning disab*" +~child*

NOW LOOK BELOW....

instructional strategies* + literacy* + learning disabilities* + children

What is wrong with the search string above?

First:

bullet instructional strategies* should be
bullet "instructional strateg*"  This will allow Google to add either  "ies" or a "y" to "strateg".  Look at the results of the Google Search...

Do you see that a "y" was added  and in the next "hit" there was an "ies" added?

Why is it better to put a phrase in quotes? Because the phrase must be exact. We are not interested in the two words being found paragraphs apart in the same Web Page...they probably will not relate to each other.  Still another thought is...don't put toooooo many words in quotes.  That limits your search to all those words being exactly in the Web Page as they are in quotes.

Second, when using the + and -  operators.... spaces go before these operators, but not after.

bullet "instructional strateg*" +literacy +"learning disabilit*" +~children

This string allows for instructional strategies and instructional strategy... with literacy and with learning disabilities and learning disability.  The +~children will allow for synonyms like:
bulletstudents
bulletpupils
bulletchildren
bulletyouth
bulletyoung people
bulletadolescents
bulletteenagers

REMEMBER:

~ gives you synonyms automatically! YOU don't need to add them to the search string.

*supplied with a root word would give you variations of the word. However, if you supply the entire word...it will give you strange results.

You don't need quotes or parentheses around a single word.

There should be a space before you use a + or - but NOT afterward
strategies  +literacy
engaged  +learning

When you have more than one word, you should use quotes around the phrase.  When you have a phrase, like "instructional strategies", it is better to use quotes instead of

instructional AND strategies

In the case of a phrase like the one above, it is useless to use the AND Operator.  However, it is NOT useless to use the AND Operator when you need it in complex searches.
