Department Chair, Elementary
 

 

 

 


Duties:  The Department Chairperson shall coordinate the efforts of the department to facilitate the curriculum and instruction according to the campus and district improvement plans for the benefit of all students' progress. The Department Chair shall assist the Curriculum Director in the following ways:

 

à        Collaborate with department members to create a Curriculum Calendar providing for:

o       TEKS & TAAS

o       TPRI scope & analysis K-2 for 3rd grade success

o       Department Reading lists for Pre-K to 6

o       Skills development Pre-K to 6

o       Research & Information Skills Pre-K to 6

o       Character Development Pre-K to 6

o       Problem solving Pre-K to 6

o       Communication Skills (Reading, Writing, Questioning, & Speech across the curriculum Pre-K to 6)

o       Career Exploration Pre-K to 6

o       Technology Skills (TA TEKS for K-5)  

o       Scans Skills Pre-K to 6 (Collaboration, Time Management, Resource Management, Service)

 

à        Assist all department members in development of a Project-based Curriculum Unit (for preferably the 5th Six Weeks.) Refer to Project-based curriculum http://www.arp.sprnet.org/project/index.htm

à        Assist in the planning, formulation, and implementation of department Curriculum Guides utilizing eclectic approaches to multiple intelligences & differentiated instruction.

à        If not already certified, acquire GT certification (30 hours) within the next fiscal year

à        Mentor department members in new processes and procedures for Lesson Plans and evaluations--both formative & summative.

à        Submit recommendations from your department for Staff Development to improve student progress (including grant proposals, curriculum materials, improvement initiatives, staffing, budgeting, inservice, waivers, etc.)

à        Coordinate efforts of the department in desegregation of student data and create formal written reports to the Curriculum Director concerning student mastery utilizing departmental pre-tests, multiple alternative assessments (portfolios, rubrics), mid-term tests, STAR, TPRI, TAAS, project evaluations, and final exams given by all members of the department for the purpose of formative evaluation and program modification.

à        Assist the Curriculum Director in projecting student performance on the TPRI, TAAS, SOI, and standardized tests and help develop corrective action plans for student progress.

à        Assist the district in budget proposals for curriculum materials, resources, and tools to improve student progress.

à        Coordinate department communications with parents, students, and community.  Develop a routine approach to involving parents and document it

à        Develop a regular schedule for department meetings and maintain detailed documentation (agendas, sign-in sheets, & minutes) and publish all minutes to the department members & Curriculum Director

à        At the end of each Six Weeks, meet with the Curriculum Director and Principal for a vertical Department Chair Meeting to discuss department progress, needs assessment, concerns, and student achievement & projections.
