Tutorial offerings at the secondary campus level

Target population:

Secondary students who are in need of extra instruction/reteaching/individual attention in mastering academic courses of study.

Description of the program:

The tutorials at the secondary level are structured at various times during the school day, most occurring from 3:15 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. The students report to their regular academic teachers for this effort. Tutorials are emphasized primarily Monday - Thursday afternoons, but certainly Friday schedules are available when necessary. High school tutorials are scheduled any time for 7:40 a.m. to 8:05 a.m. or on an afternoon schedule similar to the Junior High School.

 

Title I Reading Program

Target population:

Grades 6-8

Junior High Title I Reading Teacher

Description of the program:

The purpose of the Title I Reading Program is to provide support in reading to disadvantaged students and to remediate students who are academically low in reading. Eligible students are served on a priority basis with priority given to students with the greatest need. Students who score below the 40th percentile on achievement tests are targeted. Identified students are placed in smaller classes and given an opportunity to achieve in the regular curriculum. Students are exited when they achieve above the 40th percentile on the National Test of Basic Skills.

 

Basic Classes

Target population:

Students in grades 9-12 who are functioning two or more years below grade level in mathematics

Description of the program:

Basic classes are designed to assist students who demonstrate academic deficiencies in the mastery of essential elements. The following basic courses are offered:

  1. Algebra I
  1. Geometry

 

Extracurricular Activities

Target population:

All secondary students in grades 6-12

How to contact:

Principals, counselors

Description of the program:

All secondary schools in the Arp Independent School District offer a variety of activities above and beyond the regular school day. These activities vary from complete athletic programs to music, theater, art clubs, business and agriculture groups, etc. All students are eligible to participate in the organization itself and must be passing all courses to participate in specified activities. Students are encouraged to participate and become an integral part of campus life. However, the professional staffs stay alert to ensure that a student does not "overdo" in the area of extracurricular activities but maintains a healthy balance between the academic program and the clubs, organizations, and extracurricular opportunities.

 

TAAS Training

Target population:

Students in grades 6-12

How to contact:

Teacher, Principal

Description of the program:

During the year students who exhibit deficiencies on test objectives are targeted for special tutoring. The tutoring takes place in the English and Mathematics classroom with teachers before and during school.
