TECHNOLOGY MAINTENANCE

PROCEDURES

COMPUTER MAINTENANCE:

The following practices have been found to reduce maintenance costs. All district equipment will be used following these guidelines.

DO NOT:

bulb.jpg (1010 bytes)DO NOT Turn on a computer without using a surge protector (one per machine)

bulb.jpg (1010 bytes)DO NOT Turn off computer while in Microsoft Windows

bulb.jpg (1010 bytes)DO NOT spray cleaners directly on any electronic component.  To clean your screen or computer, lightly spray a lint free dust cloth and then wipe down equipment

bulb.jpg (1010 bytes)DO NOT Cover your computer with plastic while it is on-- the heat buildup is dangerous!

bulb.jpg (1010 bytes)DO NOT Save personal files on the hard drive of your computer -- use network folders to assist you in remote access

bulb.jpg (1010 bytes)DO NOT LOAD any program files on your computer. Contact a technology coordinator before you attempt to load any software on your machine!

bulb.jpg (1010 bytes)DO NOT Load any shareware program or other software not purchased by the district. Viruses are transmitted this way.

bulb.jpg (1010 bytes)DO NOT Bump a computer or "jar" it, move it or the table it is sitting on while it is running. Keep printers off the same table as your computer. Movement of your computer may cause hard drive failure.

bulb.jpg (1010 bytes)DO NOT Set other electronic equipment near your computer (phones, stereos, radios, coffee cup warmers, etc.)

bulb.jpg (1010 bytes)DO NOT Plug other electronic appliances into your surge protector. This causes small surges that eventually may damage your computer.

bulb.jpg (1010 bytes)DO NOT Unplug your computer while it is running. Use the surge protector switch to turn off your computer before you unplug the surge protector from the wall.

bulb.jpg (1010 bytes)DO NOT bring diskettes in and out of the district unless you wish to be responsible for virus scanning and screening all diskettes.

bulb.jpg (1010 bytes)DO NOT Allow students to utilize the Internet while unattended -- for ANY reason!

bulb.jpg (1010 bytes)DO NOT Allow students to perform administrative tasks on your computer (i.e. add programs, delete programs, perform upgrades or maintenance, unless accompanied by a maintenance request form from your campus technology coordinator.)

DO:

bulb.jpg (1010 bytes)Use a surge protector on all electronic equipment.

bulb.jpg (1010 bytes)Keep dust and liquids away from all electronic equipment.  Dust the system regularly.

bulb.jpg (1010 bytes)Run SCANDISK & Defrag often, to optimize your computer.  If you do not know how to do this, contact your technology coordinator.

bulb.jpg (1010 bytes)Unplug your system from the wall on vacations, unless your technology coordinator tells you otherwise.

bulb.jpg (1010 bytes)Keep your mouse pad clean. This will lengthen the life of your mouse.

bulb.jpg (1010 bytes)Lock your computer before leaving it unattended.

bulb.jpg (1010 bytes) Remove all batteries from calculators, remote controls, and other similar equipment over long breaks or summer vacations.  Batteries should be stored in plastic wrap so that they do not touch each other or other metals.  Keep them in a cool dry place.
