1. Responsible Use
__ Level 1 - I am not aware of any ethical issues surrounding computer use.
__ Level 2 - I know that all computers in the district are part of a network of electronic resources that I must use responsibly.
__ Level 3 - I understand and follow district rules concerning copyright, the Internet, passwords, and appropriate use of resources, etc. I don't attempt to install software on my classroom computer.
__ Level 4 - I model ethical use of all electronic resources and teach my students to be responsible users.
2. Basic Computer Use
__ Level 1 - I do not use a computer.
__ Level 2 - I use the computer to run a few specific, pre-loaded programs.
__ Level 3 - I open programs from icons and the Start Menu and use more than one program at the same time.
__ Level 4 - I teach basic operations to my students and try to troubleshoot problems when they occur.
3. File Management
__ Level 1 - I do not save any documents I create using the computer.
__ Level 2 - I select, open and save documents on different network (folders) drives.
__ Level 3 - I use Windows Explorer or My Computer to locate drives and files.
__ Level 4 - I create folders to organize my files, and maintain my own network folder within network limits. I teach students how to save and organize their files on the network.
4. E-mail
__ Level 1 - I do not use e-mail.
__ Level 2 - I check my district email daily and I maintain my mail folders in an organized manner.
__ Level 3 - I use e-mail to request and send information for research.
__ Level 4 - I incorporate e-mail use into classroom activities.
5. Word Processing
__ Level 1 - I do not use a word processor.
__ Level 2 - I use a word processor for basic writing tasks.
__ Level 3 - I use a word processing program for nearly all my written professional work: memos, tests, worksheets and home communication. I edit, spell-check and change the format of a document.
__ Level 4 - I teach students to use word processing programs for their written communication.
6. Graphics
__ Level 1 - I do not use graphics with my word processing or presentations.
__ Level 2 - I select and insert graphics or clipart into my documents to illustrate a point.
__ Level 3 - I edit clip art, scan graphics and modify them using a graphic editor (L-View and IrView).
__ Level 4 - I use digital cameras with students to create graphics for a variety of instructional uses (Web pages, technology presentations, newsletters, desktop publishing, etc.).
7. Desktop Publishing
__ Level 1 - I do not use a publishing program.
__ Level 2 - I use templates or wizards to create a published document.
__ Level 3 - I create original publications from a blank page, combining design elements such as columns, clip art, tables, word art and captions.
__ Level 4 - I design original publications that communicate to others.
8. Spreadsheet
__ Level 1 - I do not use a spreadsheet.
__ Level 2 - I enter data in a spreadsheet and create charts of data with titles and labels.
__ Level 3 - I use formulas to help analyze and interpret data.

I teach students to use spreadsheets to improve their own data keeping and analysis skills.9. Library Database

__ Level 2 - I search for books and videotapes in the school library catalog and the District Central Media Library, using title, author, subject and keyword searches.
__ Level 3 - I locate and use materials from my school library.
__ Level 4 - I teach my students to begin their research using the online library catalog (in the classroom, lab or library).
10. Research / Information-Searching
__ Level 1 - I do not conduct research or teach my students to conduct research.
__ Level 2 - I help students brainstorm possible sources of information.

Level 3 - I teach my students to use various electronic databases (EBSCO, Electric Library, World Book, Proquest), and to utilize keywords, limiters and other features of the database to answer their research questions.__ Level 4 - I teach students to begin their research with an essential question, and help them brainstorm subsidiary questions and keywords to guide their search.
11. Internet
__ Level 1 - I do not use the Internet.
__ Level 2 - I access school and district Web sites to find information. I follow links from these sites to various Internet resources.
__ Level 3 - I use multiple search engines to locate information for my lesson preparation.
__ Level 4 - I teach students strategies to evaluate information for authenticity, bias, reliability, authority and accuracy.
12. Technology Presentation
__ Level 1 - I do not use technology for presentations to my classes.
__ Level 2 - I use templates or wizards to create technology presentations (PowerPoint, Web pages).

Level 3 - I use a projection device or a scan-converter to display electronic information and model skills for students.__ Level 4 - I teach my students how to use presentation software, emphasizing content rather than "flash" to clearly communicate their ideas to the audience.
13. Technology Integration
__ Level 1 - I do not expect students to use technology in my classroom.
__ Level 2 - I accept student work produced electronically, but do not require it.
__ Level 3 - I plan lessons utilizing technology and I take technology workshops to extend my own skills and better integrate technology into my curriculum.
__ Level 4 - I support the District Technology Plan and integrate the use of technology throughout my curriculum. I frequently model and teach my students to employ computer-based technologies for communication, data analysis, and problem solving.
14. Technology Use

This form was developed by the library media specialists and teachers of the Bellingham Public Schools who based it upon the Mankato Scale first developed by the Mankato (Minnesota) Public Schools to measure the growth of staff technology skills.
