Title: Secondary Counselor Job Description

Reports to: Principal

Qualifications:

1. A Master’s Degree

  1. Mid-management certification (optional)
  2. A valid Texas school counselor’s certificate
  3. Three years teaching experience as a classroom teacher
  4. 200 Hours Professional Development every 5 years
  5. Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board of Trustees may find appropriate & acceptable

 

Supervises:  Assigned student aides and clerical employees where applicable.

 

Terms of Employment:  Administrative/Professional; 11 months

 

Major Responsibilities and Duties

 

I.          School Climate

a.       Communicates effectively with students, professional staff, parents and community in a positive manner.

b.      Initiates and supports programs that facilitate a positive, caring climate for learning.

II.                School Improvement

a.       Provides guidance to individuals and groups of students to develop education, career and personal plans.

b.      Counsels and serves as a resource person for parents on concerns relative to their student.

 

III.             Instructional Management

a.       Acts as district/secondary coordinator for the administration of the state-mandated tests and the district’s standardized testing programs.

b.      Collects and interprets test data for use in student placement and instructional programs.  Assists in scheduling students in appropriate remediation and activity classes.

c.       Consults with school administrator, faculty and other special services personnel relative to school’s curricular offerings.

d.      Cooperates with administrators and teachers in identifying students with special abilities, in providing appropriate placement, and in disseminating information regarding special programs via ARD process.

e.       Disseminates materials and information for course selection and scheduling of students.  Assists students in completing scheduling requests and verifies requests with transcript for accuracy to insure that state and district requirements are fulfilled.  Signs off on the student schedule request before delivering them to PEIMS clerk for input.

f.        Collects and reports student data for external tests including PSAT, SAT, ACT and ASVAB

g.       Publishes the campus report card from T.E.A. to community.

 

IV.              Personnel Management

a.       Works cooperatively with the staff to provide information concerning student needs.

 

V.                 Administration and Fiscal/Facilities Management

a.       Complies with district policies, as well as state and federal guidelines (Adding 5 points per semester to Honors Courses till 2004)

b.      Recommends and implements the budget for campus guidance programs.

 

VI.              Student Management

a.       Develops and maintains effective individual and group relationships with students and parents.

b.      Provides confidential crisis counseling and consultation to students.

c.       Conferences with students, teachers, parents, and other relevant individuals concerning grades and works together for improvement.

d.      Informs students of the requirement of state-mandated test dates, credit-by-exam dates, dual credit, college early admissions programs, and/or progress toward graduation.

e.       Assists with coordination of Advanced Placement Programs, administrates Advanced Placement Tests.

f.        Plans, coordinates and administers PSAT.

g.       Disseminates information to students concerning summer school, correspondence courses, GED and other alternative forms of education.

h.       Conducts registration conferences with parents and students new to the district.

i.         Works cooperatively with middle school teachers/principal to ease transition of students to high school.

j.        Schedules students in appropriate courses; checks student transcripts for correct course placement and accuracy to insure that state and district requirements are fulfilled.  Signs off on student schedule requests before handing to PEIMS Clerk for input.

k.      Provides current information on colleges and career opportunities.

l.         Assists students with the application process for college admissions, scholarships financial aid and alternative post-secondary education, including letters of recommendation.

m.     Assists the principal in organizing commencement ceremonies.

n.       Plans and coordinates senior honors and awards programs.

o.      Identifies and verifies PEIMS data for identifying students in “at risk” situations and provides to PEIMS clerks for input.

 

VII.           Professional Growth and Development

a.       Participates in professional development programs which lead to improved job performance.

b.      Performs duties in a professional, ethical, and responsible manner as defined in TEA Code of Ethics for Educators.

 

VIII.        School/Community Relations

a.       Works cooperatively with appropriate agencies, community groups and school organizations.

b.      Uses an effective referral process for assisting students, parents and staff members to use community agencies and services.

 

IX.              Equipment and Resources

a.       Uses computer to access data regarding schedules, assessment/achievement, transcripts, demographics, and family.

b.      Works with instructional consultant regarding insuring current scholarships, college information, assessment calendar, student/parent forms, etc. are part of district website.

c.       Operates audio-visual equipment for group guidance as appropriate.

 

X.                 Working Conditions

a.       Mental Demands:  Reading, ability to communicate effectively (verbal and written); maintains emotional control under stress.

b.      Physical Demands:  Moderate standing, stooping, bending and lifting, may need the ability to control sudden violent or extreme physical acts of others and exhibit rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously.  May be subjected to adverse and hazardous working conditions.
