Senior Checklist of Things to Do (When Planning for College)

Check each line as you complete the activity.

Senior Year: Summer Timetable and Checklist

_____   Identify what you are looking for in a college.

_____   Develop a list of schools that meet your personal criteria.

_____   Gather additional information on each of the schools on your list.

_____   Take the SAT, ACT and/or THEA.

_____   Plan college campus visits.

_____   Organize a person college file for the information you collect.

_____   Plan and visit college campuses

_____   Obtain college applications for institutions you are considering.

_____   Prepare a personal and academic resume.

_____   Make a list of questions and concerns that you have about each school generally.

Senior Year: Fall Timetable and Checklist

_____Watch for counseling communications, especially:

1.      in-school visits by college representative

2.      scholarship opportunities

3.      application deadlines/college updates

4.      weekly Senior Bulletins

5.      College Night, November, Oil Palace

_____ See your counselor about college selections.

_____   Identify schools and narrow choice to three.

_____ Complete admissions applications.

_____  Request transcripts from counselor.

_____ Request personal recommendations when needed and at least one week                         beforehand.

_____   Take or retake SAT, ACT and/or THEA.

Senor Year: Winter/Spring Timetable and Checklist

_____   Schedule college/scholarship interviews when required.

_____  Continue family dialogue on progress and developments.

_____ Obtain and complete FAFSA form required to determine eligibility. (Complete   online by March 1st!)

_____   Keep in contact with your school’s admissions office and financial aid office.

_____   Make your final decision.

_____   Inform other colleges you applied to of you decision.

_____ Discuss with your chosen college on next steps regarding room and board,         freshman orientation and registration, books.

JUNIORS: Check with your guidance office to make sure you are registered for the Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test/National Merit Scholarship Test (PSAT/NMSQT)

  • Set up tours and interviews at your choice of colleges.  Visit classrooms and speak to students and faculty members.  Don't forget to set up an appointment with the school's financial aid office to find out about scholarships and grant opportunities.
  • Begin the college search process by reviewing as many guides and college catalogs as possible.  Surf the Web.
