Mastering Ethics
| To educate a person in the mind but not the morals is to educate a menace to society | |
| An increasing proportion of young people are growing up without a firm understanding of or commitment to the core ethical values needed to inform & energize the conscience. | |
| As a result, they lack internal mechanisms to help them know right from wrong and to generate the will power to exercise self-control & consistently do what is right. | |
| What is it you want your children to be able to do? Memorize rules or to mature in the exercise of self-control & ethical behavior? | |
| How do we teach children to mature in ethical behavior? | |
| 5 Mastery Levels |
| Memorization of Rules = Basic Skills | |
| Use of ethical judgments only some of the time = Supplemental Tools | |
| Integration = Use & maturity in good ethical judgments in all events, occasions, social, business, or at home. Good moral character is developed over time through mentoring, examples, coaching, and providing opportunities to make moral decisions. | |
| To teach character education mean to become a mentor, dedicated to practicing what you teach in every situation. | |
| All children will develop character, either good or bad. Character is the habitual & consistent resolution of moral dilemmas through choice. Children who are expected to have the opportunity to make ethical decisions in all areas of life – soon become “competent” or proficient at making ethical decisions in any area of life. | |
| Every nation needs citizens & leaders who characterize the ethical values under all types of circumstances. | |
| Remember it is not only what you teach, but also that you model what you teach. |
