The Family of Wayne Roberts, Papa,
would like to express our thanks to all of you
who made our tragic loss a little easier to bear. Every food offering,
every flower, every prayer, every kind word, and card of sympathy brought
solace to our broken hearts and lifted our spirits. Thank you for
showing love and honor to a good and decent
man. We will miss him always.
Sue & Family
To the Roberts family, Mr. Roberts was a very special person to the Arp community and myself. I'll always remember his caring attitude for all the students. On family nights, you could see him strolling around and visiting the classrooms. He would enter mine and often look at their graded work in their cubbies. One particular time, when Jake was in my second grade class, we were having a Christmas Party, and a student opened his present only to find a broken toy. Without saying a word, he reached in his pocket and gave him a $5.00 bill. Such thoughtfulness has not been forgotten. I know he was a wonderful father, husband, and grandfather to his family, for it continually shows in their character. I am certain God welcomed him with open arms. Vicki Newton, Second Grade Teacher ,Arp Elementary
Wayne Roberts was my first Coach of any sport ,, I remember him for his caring and the things I learned from him about sports , especially baseball and competing. I remember him driving his old truck to Little league baseball practice after his work day ,, and having baseball practice,,at the time the most fun I could have.. He noticed everything I did and always let me know about.. .. He nick named me Kato, and even announced me with that name at an allstar game…He has always cared about all people, no matter what background.. He was there at my Fathers funeral….I always made it a point to acknowledge him when I came home , shake his hand.. He would tell my daughter my Little league Stories.. .. He will be surely missed, but I’m sure he touched many lives… now, bound for glory.. Danny C. Brown Shift Supervisor, HDC Command Center
My most cherished memory or Mr. Wayne, as I called him was talking to him about sports, particularly baseball. I was so impressed about how he spoke of our kids. I can honestly say I can never remember hearing him speaking about the kids in a negative manner. Even when I knew he believed that one of our athletes could do better or give greater effort he never came out and said it. His demeanor always gave the kid the benefit of the doubt. Also, I never heard him say the words “black kid” or “white kid” that so many people use when referring to athletes or kids in general. His presence at Arp ISD activities will be greatly missed. But his memory will not be forgotten. We have lost several people in the past few years who were important to our schools and community. Their spirits live on and I know Mr. Wayne’s will too. I suspect he is getting his lawn chair ready as I type these words, for tonight is a basketball game night. The bonus is he will be able to watch both the boys and girls play tonight, despite playing in different towns. And what great seats he will have in heaven. Sincerely, Dwight Thomas, Arp Jr. High Principal

I met Mr. Roberts over nine years ago. Mr. Roberts was coming out of Mr. Rosie's office and the AD at that time introduced me to Mr. Wayne. He knew who I was and where I was from (Garrison). Mr. Wayne said to me, "I know who you are, your that long tall QB that played for them Bulldogs." He knew almost everything about me. Mr. Wayne was very encouraging, and hoped that I would come here to work. Nine years later, I am still in Arp, America. I have to say that a big reason that I am still here is because of his leadership. I have served in almost every capacity that there is to serve in here at Arp and I have always been able to count on Mr. Robert's support. Mr. Wayne, I thank you for everything that you have done for me and for what you have done for Arp I.S.D. Mr. Wayne, you have finished the course, you have kept the faith--there is a crown of righteousness for you now in heaven. Love, COACH A.
I have known Wayne Roberts since I was a student at Arp Elementary School. The very first memory I have of Wayne was when he coached my brother Ken’s Little League baseball team. I can remember Wayne standing on the pitchers mound bare footed throwing hundreds of balls for the boys to have batting practice after he had put in a full day of work. When I got older I realized he was bare footed because he had to wear steel toed boots to work and they were too heavy to pitch in. When I graduated from college with my teaching degree, Wayne stopped me after church one Sunday and asked if I was ready to go to work at Arp I.S.D. Things were done a little different back then. Thirty one years later Wayne was still on the school board and I am still teaching at Arp. Many times Wayne would stop and ask me how things were going. His presence, knowledge, and concern for Arp I.S.D. will be greatly missed. I personally will miss seeing him sit at the front of church each Sunday morning, sitting in his lawn chair at sporting events, and at special events and programs at the elementary school. Sue, Robin, Gitsy, Lisa, and all the grandchildren, your husband, daddy, and Papa was a good man and a special friend to my family. Wayne is now rejoicing in the rewards of heaven. My prayers are with all of you at this difficult time. Sincerely, Janet Shuttlesworth
In Dale’s 14 years of coaching, I have never seen someone who supported a school and all of its activities more than Mr. Roberts. At each venue, you knew exactly where to look to find him sitting in his lawn chair. At the Junior High game on the night of his accident, I could just picture him in the corner of the old gym cheering on Mallory as she played. One memory that I always remember about Mr. Roberts was at one of our games, he called Brett and I over to see him and he handed Brett a little Matchbox car. All of you know how much Brett loves cars and Mr. Roberts had come across this little car and he knew that Brett would enjoy it, so he saved it for him. Just an example of his thoughtfulness…. We will miss you! Tonya Irwin
