Justification
for Teaching Signing to Struggling Readers
Signing gives students the opportunity to use a
kinesthetic movement and associate it with a non-concrete concept --
letter recognition.
Students learn quickly when signing the alphabetic
letters. While in the initial stage of sound to letter recognition,
signing assists students in avoiding the tendency to reverse letters while
writing.
Signing a letter to a student before asking a student
to correct a reversal, assists the student in self-correction. |
