How To Use This Information This schedule allows for at least one elective per year and would fulfill the requirements of the Recommended and Distinguished Academic High School Programs. Selection of courses should be based upon: (1) Student desire, (2) Parent desire, (3) Counselor recommendation, (4) Teacher recommendation. When selecting elective courses, students should consider career goals, interests, and abilities. Earning High School Credit Students earn one-half credit for each semester of a course in which he/she earns a grade average of 70 or higher. In selecting courses, students will notice that some courses are for 1 credit (full year) and some are for 1/2 credit (one semester). A student must enroll all year for a 1 credit course, one semester for a 1/2 credit course. Students who are repeating a 1 credit course must receive Principal Approval to enroll only in the semester they failed. Earning College Credit with a 6-Year Plan Arp High School is proud to offer all incoming Freshman an opportunity to complete a 6 Year Plan (4 Year High School and 2 Year College) with dual credit courses. When a student and parent sign a 6 Year Plan for Business Administrations, Career & Technology, or Technology Applications, the student is capable of gaining the maximum allowable college credit while still on Arp High School campus. 15 hours of college credit may be earned during your Junior and Senior years at Arp High School. If you are interested in beginning your dual credit courses, please see your School Counselor. DUAL CREDIT & ARTICULATION COURSES Articulation courses are those which allow students to gain college credit while taking courses at Arp High School. These courses may be taken separately or as part of a 6 Year Plan. A student must maintain a 3.0 average in order to receive dual credit. The classes which may be applied to college credit are marked by shade in this booklet. A student may take a dual credit course with parent permission and teacher recommendation. ADVANCED PLACEMENT (AP) CLASSES Advanced Placement classes are offered in core subject areas at Arp High School as well as through distance learning opportunities. We try to maintain a large variety of distance learning courses so that students who are working toward the Recommended and the Distinguished Academic High School Programs can meet the AP requirement. If a student is interested in AP classes will need to meet with the campus counselor and AP teacher for details and class syllabus. GIFTED & TALENTED All students entering the 9th grade will receive the SOI test for career aptitude / choice and as a gifted learner indicator. A matrix is used to determine acceptance into the high school GT program. The matrix compiles SOI scores, teacher and parent recommendations and student interests. Gifted and talented students are offered advanced courses in English, Math, Science, Technology, and Interdisciplinary Studies at Arp High School. In addition, all secondary teachers have been trained to offer enrichments for the GT learner in the regular classroom.COURSE SYLLABUS FOR CORE CLASSES (http://www.arp.sprnet.org/Curric/classes.htm) Arp ISD has a district policy that requires each teacher in a core subject area to provide students and parents with a course syllabus for each six weeks of the class. This syllabus will outline course objectives, projects, examinations, and expectations. Parents should consult this syllabus with their children and determine major goals and accomplishments for each course. Parental involvement in the education process is highly recommended in the Arp Independent School District. Questions and concerns can be better addressed when using the course syllabus as a guideline. EARLY RELEASE (WORK) PROGRAM The early-release (work) program at Arp High School is designed to help students with hardship needs and those who have secured career-oriented employment. Students who are considered for early release must: Evaluation can be obtained from the Work Program Supervisor and must be completed and signed by the employer, student and parent. CREDIT BY EXAMINATION Students may gain credit for a course through an examination scheduled by the campus counselor. An examination schedule will be posted in the counselors office for dates and times of when examinations will be offered. Please make an appointment with the campus counselor, if your child is interested in gaining credit by examination.
