Bilingual Education

Description of the program:

Arp Elementary School has an instructional program, grades PK - 5, which targets English language and essential elements for students whose native language is Spanish and who are identified as limited English proficient students. The program incorporates instructional methodology such as English as a second language instruction as is appropriate, and adaptations in pacing to facilitate maximum acquisition of both English and the essential elements as prescribed in chapters 77 and 72 of the Texas Education Codes.

Description of the program:

Tutorial classes, minimum of 90 minutes per week, are scheduled during the regular school day for any student who is scoring below 70 in any subject area.

 

Kindergarten - whole day

Target population:

Children who are five on or before September 1 each year

Description of the program:

A full day instructional program is offered all five-year-olds. The program focuses on developmental learning in a learning-center environment. A certified teacher provides instruction and direction for up to twenty-two children. Program content includes language arts, mathematics, science, health, fine arts, physical education, and social studies. The Texas Essential Elements for Kindergarten provide the framework for a leaner objectives basic curriculum.

Description of the program:

The maximum class enrollment in grades K through fourth is twenty-two students for each certified teacher. This allows for more individual attention for students, smaller groups, for group instruction and close monitoring and individualization of learning tasks. This number is only exceeded by submission of a waiver to the Texas Education Agency. Pre-K has maximum class enrollment of eighteen students for each certified teacher.

 

Title I

Target population:

Grades 2-5 in the elementary school.

Description of the program:

The purpose of the Title I Reading Program is to provide support in reading to disadvantaged students and to remediate students who are academically low in reading. Eligible students are served on a priority basis with priority given to students with the greatest need. Students who score below the 40th percentile on achievement tests are targeted. Identified students are placed in smaller classes and given an opportunity to achieve in the regular curriculum. Students are exited when they achieve above the 40th percentile on the National Test of Basic Skills.

WHO - We Help Ourselves

Target population:

Students in grades K-5

Description of the program:

The WHO program is designed to teach students to recognize abuse, to have a personal plan for avoiding victimization, and to emphasize who to tell if they are victimized. The Curriculum Specialist has received training in the program presentation and can train teachers to present the program to all elementary students enrolled in grades K-5.

Elementary Gifted and Talented Programs

Target population:

Students 3 through 5

Description of program:

Gifted students whose needs are not met with instruction commensurate with their abilities may be classified as at risk. Learning patterns must be established early and high expectation must be the rule rather than the exception for bright students. The district serves five to seven percent of each grade level.

Students are provided with 1/2 day per week of instruction and activities that provide an emphasis on cognitive thinking and enrichment in the content areas.

Specific criteria must be met for placement in this program.

Early Prevention of School Failure

Target population:

Pre-kindergarten and Kindergarten students

Description of the program:

Early Prevention of School Failure (EPSF) is a program designed to prevent school failure by identifying the developmental styles of preschool children. The program uses a professional tam to implement the main components of the program. These include:

  1. Screening to identify high-need children: Pre-K during pre-registration using the SOI-L and Kindergarten using the ITBS as evaluation tools;
  1. Conferencing which involves interpreting and profiling the educational strengths and needs of the child;
  1. Educational planning to provide the experiences, curriculum, and effective teaching strategies that will ensure a successful learning environment for all students using the Learning Styles Inventory;
  1. A follow up evaluation is done as children exit kindergarten.

 

Safety Education Program

Target population:

Students grades K-5

Description of the program:

The purpose of this program is to provide a pro-active approach in establishing a pro-active approach in establishing a positive police image for the youth of the City of Arp. A combined effort of the Arp ISD and the Arp Police Department will attempt to reduce drug abuse, truancy, criminal mischief, and other crimes associated with juvenile delinquency. Police officers present classroom guidance lessons throughout the school year. Topics include:

McGruff's Drug Prevention and Protection Program

Target population:

Kindergarten

Description of program:

The objective of this program is to prevent children from becoming victims of crime. The topics covered in this curriculum are: crime prevention, drugs, strangers, child molestation, "Just Say No", traffic safety, decision-making, fire safety, alcohol, respect for authority, home safety, emergencies, self-responsibility, personal safety, vandalism, gangs, self-discipline, robbery, arson, hitchhiking, and shoplifting.
