Head Start

Head Start began as a federal program in the 1960's, designed to help communities address the educational, health, social, and psychological needs of disadvantaged preschool children ages 3 through 5 years. Since then, the program has blossomed into one of America's most innovative initiatives.  An essential part of every Head Start program is parent involvement in program planning, operating activities and parent education.

Head Start has served more than 18 million children and their families in the US since its inception.  Head Start programs are administered locally by community organizations and schools which receive federal grants of up to 80% of the approved cost to operate their Head Start program.   The community, itself, must contribute the remaining 20% in cash or contributed services.

To enroll in our program, children must be four years old on or before September 1 of their enrollment and meet income guidelines as determined annually by the Department of Health and Human Services/Administration for Children and Families.  At least ten percent of our enrollment slots must be made available to children with professionally diagnosed disabilities, which includes three year olds.

Our program is currently funded to serve _______ children within (Smith County) Arp Independent School District on a first come, first served basis.
